The 4 Square drawing is designed to train the eye to look for elements and principles of design rather than recognizable images. This project abstracts a photograph and uses drawing techniques to interpret the photograph as a new image and unique composition. The steps below will walk you through the process: Step 1: Choose a black and white image with detail and contrast. Step 2: Use a 3x3 inch viewfinder to trace a section of the image that displays a full range of values. Step 3: Create a template for enlarging your image to 3 times the size. Step 4: Measure and cut your 3x3 inch image into triangles (based on the 3x3 inch template above). Step 5: Glue your triangles to the 3x3 template to create a new image. Consider values and contrast when choosing a pattern. Your composition should be balanced. See below: Step 6: Transfer images one triangle at a time to the 3 times larger portion of the template. Step 7: Begin with lines and add values triangle by triangle to complete enlargement. |
