The Art Contract is a tool for students to keep organized throughout this course. It also lists rules and expectations of the class. Once signed, this contract is an agreement that each student will do his/her best to complete the course accordingly. Below is the content provided in the Art Contract:
The following is a written contract describing the requirements, grading, and policies of this course. Please read it completely. If you have any questions, ask your teacher before signing it. This contract muse be signed before beginning course work.
COURSE DESCRIPTION Art Contract is an instructed course designed to allow students to progress in stages through art areas of their interest with the goal of building technical skills, problem solving abilities, craftsmanship and aesthetic and critical understandings. Art Contract differs from other art courses in that students’ progress through an individualized plan of instruction. Art Contract is NOT an independent study course.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Completion of Written Art Critique: Before any studio work may begin, each student must complete a written art critique demonstrating their ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate a teacher selected work of art. (.5 credit)
2. Project Selection and Approval:All first year art contract students must complete the first year assignments. See first year packet for list of assignments. All returning students should review the project list and consider the following when selecting a project:
Interest: Choose a project based on processes and techniques you are interested in learning.
Skill Level: Choose a project based on your previous level in that project area. See project list for specific notes and requirements.
Discuss: Any questions you may have about projects you are considering with your teacher.
Sign up for the project: Complete/submit a project proposal and record all your project information in the project list located in this contract.
Teacher Signature: Get your teacher to initial your contract list when a project is selected.
3. Project Outline: Stage 1
Read About and Research Chosen Project: See project worksheets, videos, books, images, etc.
Complete a thumbnail sheet: Determine the requirements of your project and create design sketches based on these requirements.
Discuss Sketches with Teacher: Revise if necessary.
Final Drawing and Approval of Teacher: Choose your final design sketch and review with your teacher before beginning any project.
Stage 2
Teacher Demonstration: If you are unsure of any technique, or would like a refresher, please consult your teacher for a demonstration of how to begin the assignment.
Collect Materials: Gather any materials you need to begin.
Stage 3
Process: Create your artwork.
Stage 4
Project Completion
Self-Evaluation: Complete the student section of the evaluation form.
Self-Critique: Complete a written critique of your work. Be thorough and write in complete sentences.
Submit Work to Teacher: Please hand in all completed artwork with a critique and evaluation form.
4. Completion of Required Credits: Students must complete the required number of credits for the semester to receive full credit for the course. Credits will only be awarded to work that has been submitted for grading. COURSE GRADING
Grades will be determined based on the number of credits earned during the semester and the weighted averages of those credits. A 3 credit project that receives an A is more heavily weighted than a 1 credit project that receives an A. Penalties in the form of point deductions from the final grade will occur when credit requirements are not met. Additional credits above the minimum required may be used to replace a previous project of equal credit value if the grade is higher.
Grading scale is as outlined in the student handbook. In general, superior work habits, quality of work, motivation and creative ability determine best final grades.
COURSE POLICIES
Identifying Work: All drawers and work must be clearly identified with the first and last name of the student. 2D work must be signed on the back. Work that is out of place and unsigned may be thrown out.
Book and Material Sign Out: All books and materials taken from the art room MUST be signed out! It is the student’s responsibility to return those items to an instructor personally to have the instructor initial the return on the sign out sheet. Students must pay replacement costs of lost items.
Art School Students: All art school bound students and those planning to major in art in college:
Declare your plans early and ask for a recommendation.
Gather portfolio lists from colleges of interest and use those to create your project list.
Do projects for your portfolio AND do some because you need to grow and improve. ALL ARTISTS DO!
Retention of Artwork: Teachers may request to retain any of your artwork for various exhibits the art department participates in. All work requested must be made available to the faculty at any time during the school year. This is an honor and all artwork will be returned by the end of the school year.
Permission to Work in the Art Rooms Outside of Class Time: Art Contract students may work in the art contract classrooms when time and space allow and with permission of a teacher. Students must have a pass, obey class rules and stay for the full period. PLEASE NOTE: Non-Art Contract students are not allowed in the art contract rooms at any time without permission of an art contract teacher!
Attitude: Attitude towards your work, care of supplies, respect for your teacher and peers are good indicators of success in this or any class. For those who do not accept responsibilities require of the physical environment or their classwork, there are consequences.
